Headingley: Leeds rugby since 1890
AMT Headingley is Leeds Rhinos’ home, with a current rugby capacity of 19,698. The club used that figure when announcing the September 2026 Wigan match had sold out.
The first rugby match at Headingley was Leeds against Manningham on 20 September 1890. The first Northern Union game followed on 21 September 1895, against Brighouse. Those two dates reflect the ground’s use before and after the split that produced rugby league.
Fire destroyed the North Stand during Leeds against Halifax on Good Friday, 25 March 1932, causing the match to be abandoned after ten minutes. Another major interruption came in the 1962–63 freeze, when no matches were played at Headingley for seventeen weeks. The club responded by installing undersoil heating in 1963, using 30 miles of cable.
International rugby at Headingley predates the Northern Union. England and Scotland played the Calcutta Cup here in 1893, with Scotland winning by two drop goals to nil. The club’s international history also records Great Britain beating New Zealand 14–6 on 25 January 1908.
The Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Club bought Lot 17a from the Cardigan Estate in 1888 to establish the sporting ground. The first South Stand was an open wooden structure, approved in February 1891. It measured 125 feet long and a little over sixteen feet high. An extension in 1894 added a press box at the back. A galvanised-iron roof followed in 1911, supported by fourteen pillars, and the first six terrace steps were concreted. In 1932 the replacement stand initially sheltered 34 of its 58 concrete steps. Work on a second pitched roof began in 1956 and extended beyond October 1957.
The new joint stand replaced a structure that had served both sports for ninety years. Structural engineer TRP records 3,800 seats facing rugby and 4,200 facing cricket in its completed design. DLA designed the stands and Caddick Construction built them. The North Stand opening was associated with Leeds’ home match against Castleford, three days before the cricket ground’s England–Pakistan one-day international. The engineers completed their redevelopment work in early May, ahead of Headingley’s 2019 international cricket season.
The 38–4 result gave North Queensland their first World Club Challenge title. Thurston won the Graham Murray Medal as the match’s outstanding player; Murray had coached both the Cowboys and Leeds before his death in 2013. The closing stages also brought disciplinary drama, with James Tamou sin-binned and Leeds forward Mitch Garbutt sent off after an altercation. Thurston finished with five successful conversions alongside his try.

Leeds memories, the John Holmes statue and touring teams
The 1957 Challenge Cup tie with Wigan drew 38,914 spectators, with Leeds winning 13–11. The Rhinos’ account estimates a further 5,000 people were locked out. This was a very different capacity era from the modern ground. The match belongs to a long local rivalry: Leeds had already beaten Wigan 3–0 at Headingley in the second round of the 1899 cup, in rain and sleet.
In 1999, Leeds beat Wigan 28–18 in a Headingley Challenge Cup tie after Barrie McDermott was sent off. The club’s retrospective places that win on the route to ending its 21-year wait for the trophy. Later Headingley cup encounters included a 23–16 Leeds victory in 2008 and a 12–10 win in 2010, when Lee Smith supplied the decisive late score.
After completing the 2015 treble, Leeds played New Zealand at Headingley in a celebratory match. Former Rhinos Adrian Morley and Ali Lauitiiti returned for the occasion, with Kylie Leuluai also taking part as his playing career ended. New Zealand won 34–16.
Steve Winterburn created the John Holmes statue outside Headingley’s South Stand. Leeds’ tribute coverage identifies the sculpture as a focal point for supporters remembering Rob Burrow in 2024.
North Queensland’s 2016 visit drew 19,778 spectators. Rob Burrow scored Leeds’ only try, taking an Adam Cuthbertson offload after an interception had helped the Rhinos recover territory. Michael Morgan had put the Cowboys ahead, but neither first-half try was converted and the interval score was 4–4. With the breeze behind them after half-time, the visitors scored six unanswered tries. Kane Linnett crossed soon after the restart; Kyle Feldt, Lachlan Coote and Johnathan Thurston followed, before Justin O’Neill completed a double.

Burley Park, Headingley station and the stadium gates
Burley Park is the station Leeds Rhinos recommends for arrivals from Leeds city station. Both Burley Park and Headingley are on the Harrogate railway line, but the club gives a five-minute walk from Burley Park and ten minutes from Headingley. Its directions also mention a slight uphill section at the beginning of the Headingley-station walk.
The Rhinos’ local travel guide lists Headingley bus routes 22, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28, together with the X84 towards Ilkley and services 56 and 91. The stadium sits a short walk from Headingley’s centre, where the club also identifies pubs and restaurants along the Otley Road area.
The rugby stadium address is St Michael’s Lane, Headingley, Leeds, LS6 3BR. Leeds Rhinos says general-public matchday parking is unavailable at the stadium because spaces are limited. Cycle stands are listed in the South Stand car park, with further matchday racks beneath the Carnegie Pavilion on the cricket side. Non-matchday visitors are directed to the Gate B gatehouse on St Michael’s Lane for parking instructions.

Headingley food, pubs and bars
Headingley’s published concession layout includes a wood-fired pizza oven in the courtyard, Yorkshire pudding wraps and a cakes-and-coffee unit outside the Lodge. The South Stand has another pizza outlet and units selling chicken, burgers and chips. The Western Terrace food offer includes fish and chips and a craft-bar unit.
The club’s July 2026 visitor programme continued to advertise burgers, pizza, fish and chips around AMT Headingley. Its Inclusion Round information also highlighted sensory bags, ear defenders and the Rhinos Access Passport alongside the matchday activities.
The Skyrack is at 2 St Michaels Road, Leeds, LS6 3AW. Greene King lists a beer garden, sports television, a pool table and a dartboard among its facilities.
The Original Oak is at 2 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, LS6 2DG. Its own website publishes food, live-sport and entertainment information.
The South Stand concourse is a focal point for Headingley’s family entertainment. Leeds’ 2026 membership guide names Ronnie the Rhino, face painters and balloon modellers among its regular attractions. It also describes themed activities ranging from Armed Forces displays to Star Wars characters. The club calls the supporters in this section South Standers, linking the terrace’s identity to its vocal support. Above the terrace, the seated section shares that side-on setting while providing a reserved seat. The November 2025 membership announcement noted that only single South Stand seats had remained available across the previous season’s league fixtures.
Our pick (opinion): A Yorkshire pudding wrap would be our first food choice to look for here; the named Headingley outlets make the courtyard worth exploring before settling into the stand.

Choose the view: South, East, North or Western Terrace
The South Stand provides both a terrace alongside the pitch and reserved seats above it. The club describes the terrace as mostly covered and the seating as fully covered. Wheelchair spaces sit at the terrace front and within the seated area in front of the press section.
The AMT East Stand is behind the rugby posts, with a mostly covered terrace and fully covered reserved seats above. Its elevated wheelchair positions are in front of seated areas A and E. Across the opposite end, the Western Terrace offers uncovered standing and does not have wheelchair spaces.
North Stand seating runs along the side of the rugby pitch. Most rows are covered, but the club specifically warns that the front six rows are exposed to poor weather. Wheelchair places are on the third floor.
DLA’s design for the modern South Stand includes separate changing rooms for the home team, visitors and referee, reached through a secure private entrance. A central staircase and lift link the main and upper concourses. The upper concourse serves the elevated seating, while a suspended television gantry hangs above. Toilets and food concessions are incorporated into the main concourse beneath the spectator accommodation.
The North Stand is double-sided: one set of spectators faces the rugby pitch and the other faces Yorkshire’s cricket ground. Its replacement formed part of the redevelopment completed in 2019. Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson designed and detailed the new stands’ precast terrace units, stairs, step blocks and walls around the spectator entrances. The work replaced both the rugby South Stand and the joint North Stand within the existing Headingley site.
Our advice (opinion): For a standing visit with some cover, we would choose the South Stand terrace over the uncovered Western Terrace. The reserved seats above offer another distinct option.

Rhinos Access and the actual viewing areas
The accessible visitors guide lists 82 wheelchair spaces. These comprise 24 terrace-front and eight upper positions in the South Stand, 24 terrace-front and 14 upper positions in the East Stand, and 12 third-floor positions in the North Stand. Every space has a companion seat. In the South and North stands that seat is beside the wheelchair bay; in the East Stand it is behind it.
Two Changing Places facilities are listed, one in the South Stand and one in the North Stand. The guide identifies accessible entrances at Gate B on St Michael’s Lane, Gate E at the South Stand and Gate G on Kirkstall Lane. For the East Stand lift, it directs visitors to the ground floor outside the AMT Café Bar.
Rhinos Access lends sensory bags and ear defenders and offers an Access Passport for discreetly communicating requirements to matchday staff. The club also lists accessible toilets, Changing Places facilities, companion tickets and dedicated wheelchair viewing areas. The passport is intended to reduce repeated explanations of an access need.

The stadium hotel and other Headingley visits
Headingley Stadium Hotel, also known in earlier club information as Headingley Lodge, sits within the stadium complex. Its operator describes 36 bedrooms overlooking the Yorkshire cricket ground and a room-only accommodation offer. The view is of the cricket oval, rather than the rugby field.
The club’s Headingley Lodge description lists lifts to every floor, accessible rooms, small fridges, tea-and-coffee facilities and Wi-Fi. It also places the accommodation within walking distance of Headingley shops and restaurants, with Burley Park and Headingley railway stations nearby.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s City of Maths partnership uses stadium tours for school groups. The programme announced ten tours for schools where additional maths enrichment could have particular value, combining sport with structured learning activities.
