One league, different rugby weekends

The United Rugby Championship brings together clubs from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa. For a travelling supporter, that gives a broad choice: an evening at a familiar club ground, an Irish interprovincial weekend, an Italian city visit or a longer trip to follow your team overseas. Pick the home club and the actual match venue first, then connect the ticket to your travel plans.

The league’s competition rules award four league points for a win and two for a draw. Scoring at least four tries earns a bonus point, and a losing side can gain a bonus point for finishing within seven points. A team can collect both losing bonuses. That explains why the closing minutes can still matter when one side looks likely to win: the league table depends on more than the result alone.

The regular season runs across 18 rounds, followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The published league format places all results in one table, with the top eight reaching the knockout stage. The geographical pools organise the schedule: Ireland, Wales and South Africa each have a four-team group, while Scotland and Italy share another. Clubs play their pool opponents home and away, then meet the other twelve once.

Our advice for a newcomer: start with the match in front of you. Follow the score, notice when a side reaches its fourth try and listen to how the crowd responds to the final stages. You can enjoy the day without memorising the table. If you want the broader picture, look at the official standings before travelling and again after the game. The changing position makes an ordinary league weekend feel connected to the season’s bigger story.

Scotland: Glasgow and Edinburgh

Scotstoun Stadium is Glasgow Warriors’ regular home. The club moved there in 2012, having previously used the venue as a training base. Its visitor guidance gives the Danes Drive address and explains the lack of public match-day parking. Choose a transport plan that reaches western Glasgow comfortably, then keep enough time for the final walk and your allocated gate.

Hive Stadium is Edinburgh Rugby’s regular venue beside Scottish Gas Murrayfield. Selected derby games use larger grounds, and Edinburgh’s current fixture listing includes Murrayfield and Hampden Park. Use the venue for the individual match when buying travel. Our Edinburgh weekend guide helps you connect the rugby with the rest of the city.

Our view: Scottish club rugby and a national-stadium occasion offer different visits. A smaller ground lets you build the evening around the club itself. A larger derby event requires a different arrival and seating plan. Decide which occasion appeals to your group before comparing hotels, rather than assuming every match carrying the same club badge follows the same itinerary.

Wales: four clubs, four local journeys

Cardiff Arms Park puts Cardiff Rugby beside Principality Stadium on Westgate Street. The club ground has its own entrances and match arrangements. Use the Cardiff city-break guide for an overnight visit, but follow Cardiff Rugby’s instructions for the final approach.

Rodney Parade is the Dragons’ ground in Newport beside the River Usk. Parc y Scarlets is the Scarlets’ Llanelli home. St Helen’s is Ospreys’ Swansea home for 2026/27, replacing the temporary Brewery Field arrangement in Bridgend during the previous season. That move makes an old stadium guide a poor basis for a new booking.

Our Welsh weekend advice: let each town have its own visit. A Cardiff base can work for some travellers, but it creates an onward journey for Newport, Llanelli or Swansea rugby. Compare that transfer with staying in the home club’s city. Give the return after an evening game particular attention. The cheapest room is less persuasive if reaching it turns the end of the match into a hurried transport exercise.

Ireland: the provinces and their homes

Thomond Park is a Munster home in Limerick, with an official museum and stadium tour. Munster uses more than one ground, so a province name does not identify a hotel location. Start with the precise fixture and build the overnight visit around it.

Laya Arena at the RDS is Leinster’s redeveloped Ballsbridge home. Some Leinster matches still use Aviva Stadium or Croke Park. A Dublin weekend can accommodate any of those venues, but the final approach and best accommodation neighbourhood differ.

Affidea Stadium is Ulster’s Belfast ground, historically known as Ravenhill. Dexcom Stadium is Connacht’s Galway home, previously known as the Sportsground. Use the current venue names when reading tickets and visitor instructions.

Our advice for an Irish interprovincial weekend: secure the match ticket before committing to the most restrictive travel bookings. Choose a meal stop that fits your arrival route and leave the match build-up unhurried. Visiting a different province is a chance to enjoy a local rugby setting, so allow time beyond the turnstile queue. A museum or stadium tour, where offered, belongs in a separate confirmed booking rather than an assumption about match-day access.

Italy: Treviso and Parma

Stadio Monigo is Benetton Rugby’s Treviso home. Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi is Zebre Parma’s venue inside the Cittadella del Rugby. The Italian derby connects those clubs, but the two stadiums belong to different cities and require separate transport plans.

Our Italian trip advice: keep the stadium transfer visible in the itinerary. Arriving at a city station or an airport does not complete the journey to a rugby seat. Compare local accommodation with a wider sightseeing base, then decide whether the additional travel improves the weekend. Read the ticket’s local kick-off time carefully when sharing plans with people travelling from Britain or Ireland.

South African teams and longer trips

The competition also includes the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers. Use the league’s official team directory and match centre to follow their fixtures. A European home match against one of these sides can be a straightforward introduction; travelling to South Africa requires a wider itinerary and more time around the rugby.

Our recommendation for a longer overseas visit: secure the event details first, then plan the arrival day, the accommodation and the journey after the match. Leave room for travel disruption rather than scheduling a flight immediately around a rugby finish. For entry requirements, insurance and personal travel documents, use the relevant official travel guidance for your nationality and destination.

Turn the fixture into a good weekend

Our planning order is simple: genuine ticket, suitable seat, arrival route, return journey, overnight stay. Work through those choices with everybody attending. A child, a wheelchair user and a supporter arriving after work may need different parts of the day explained before the booking is comfortable for the whole group.

Use our ticket guide, travel planning guide and accessibility questions to organise the trip. Compare the grounds through the Venues hub, and choose an overnight area from Where to stay. A workable plan lets you enjoy the rugby without spending the final ten minutes worrying about a departure.

Choose the occasion, then the base

Our view: a derby offers a local rivalry; a visiting team brings a different conversation to the same ground. Neither needs to become a claim that one fixture is automatically the best. Choose according to the supporters travelling, the tickets available and the weekend you can organise comfortably. For a first trip, a clear route and a seat that suits the group matter more than trying to predict an unforgettable result. Compare accommodation only once that match plan works.
