York's new ground and its rugby identity

The LNER Community Stadium is York Knights' and York Valkyrie's home in Huntington, shared with York City Football Club. The stadium operator gives its capacity as 8,500 and its opening year as 2021. This is a purpose-built community complex on Kathryn Avenue, bringing the city's professional rugby league and football into the same sporting home. ;.

The names Knights and Valkyrie became part of a shared York RLFC identity in October 2022. The men's team retained Knights, while the women's side adopted Valkyrie. The club connected the change to its Heritage Project and the city's rugby history, deliberately linking the modern organisation with players and teams that came before the formation of York City Knights.

York explained that Valkyrie drew on the warrior figures of Norse mythology. The new identity was developed specifically for the women's team, rather than simply continuing the men's nickname. Both teams therefore belong to York RLFC while carrying different sporting names, a distinction visible in the fixture lists, ticket choices and merchandise associated with the ground.

The council's description of the complex includes an all-seater stadium, swimming facilities, a gym, a dance studio and a sports hall with spectator seating. It also includes a library, community offices, NHS outpatient services and York Against Cancer premises. Those everyday uses explain the community element of the name and the different destinations around the stadium entrance.

By July 2026, the council reported more than one million ticket sales for events at the stadium. Its list of hosted occasions includes the Women's Rugby League World Cup, the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, women's Six Nations rugby and a Challenge Cup semi-final. The venue's international role therefore spans both rugby codes alongside its resident clubs.

The Valkyrie's home Grand Final

York won its first Women's Super League title here on 8 October 2023, beating Leeds Rhinos 16–6. The attendance of 4,547 was a record for that Grand Final at the time. York had earned home advantage by finishing top of the regular-season table, turning the stadium into the setting for the club's first championship celebration under the Valkyrie identity.

Tamzin Renouf and Tara Jane Stanley scored York's first-half tries in that final, establishing an 8–0 interval lead. Lacey Owen's later try helped secure the win. The same day's earlier Group 2 final brought a 14–8 victory for Barrow Raiders over Leigh Leopards, earning Barrow a place in the following season's expanded Women's Super League.

The route into that home final also ran through the LNER Community Stadium. York beat Wigan Warriors 22–6 here in the September 2023 semi-final, recovering after Grace Banks scored an interception try for Wigan. Stanley scored once and contributed to two more York tries, placing one of the competition's leading international players at the centre of the home side's comeback.

A sold-out Challenge Cup double-header followed on 10 May 2025. The women's semi-final paired Leeds Rhinos with Wigan Warriors; the men's match brought Hull KR and Catalans Dragons to York. That occasion demonstrates why the ground can have a different crowd and ticketing arrangement from an ordinary Knights match: the governing body also uses it as a neutral cup venue.

Our pick (opinion): York Valkyrie would be our pick for a second rugby visit here, following the team whose first Super League title was secured on this ground.

York station, service 9 and Monks Cross

York railway station is the stadium operator's rail arrival point, approximately three miles from the ground. The ground itself is northeast of the city centre in Huntington. Service 9 connects the station area with Monks Cross Park & Ride, immediately beside the stadium complex, providing the public-transport link between intercity trains and the rugby ground.

First Bus identifies Monks Cross as route 9 and gives an approximate ten-minute bus journey to the city centre. That is the operator's bus journey figure, separate from the distance between York station and the stadium. First publishes the route map and live timetable on its dedicated Monks Cross page, rather than grouping it under another York park-and-ride destination.

York's council transport service distinguishes Monks Cross route 9 from Grimston Bar route 8, Designer Outlet route 7, Askham Bar route 3 and Poppleton Bar route 59. These are separate park-and-ride routes around the city. For the Community Stadium, Monks Cross is the relevant destination; travelling towards one of the other named sites takes a visitor to a different edge of York.

The leisure operator identifies more than 300 uncovered cycle stands around the complex and describes walking and cycling routes from York city centre, Huntington and Heworth. Its site directions put taxi pick-up and drop-off at the North car park. These facilities form part of the wider leisure complex, rather than a separate rugby-only entrance on the opposite side of the ground.

The North car park is reached from Jockey Lane and also serves the leisure centre, library, NHS facilities and York Against Cancer. The stadium operator directs match parking to Monks Cross Park & Ride through the clubs' ticketing arrangements. Its transport page also warns that ordinary parking around the complex has a shorter maximum stay on matchdays, making the designated rugby parking arrangement materially different from casual shopping parking.

Food, tickets and the concourse

The Little Yorkshire Coffee Co is located in the main leisure-centre atrium. Inside the stadium, food and drink concessions serve the stands before and during games. The atrium café and the stand concessions occupy different parts of this shared complex, giving visitors a named landmark at the public entrance as well as catering within the ticketed rugby areas.

York's September 2025 Knights match guide described food and drink concessions in concourse Fanzone areas and fundraising through the club's Pot of Gold draw for Squad Builder. The same guide placed digital programme QR codes around the concourses.

The stadium's main hub houses its ticket office, while North and West ticket booths provide additional matchday sales points. The operator's FAQ links to an electronic-ticket guide as an alternative to collecting a paper ticket. This arrangement places ticket help around the public hub and the stadium perimeter, rather than inside a single club-only building.

The rugby club's published directions give the matchday parking postcode as YO32 9JU for Monks Cross Park & Ride, alongside the stadium's separate YO32 9AF address. The designated matchday section contains 400 spaces. York's game guide also identifies automatic number-plate recognition in other Monks Cross car parks, a specific reason to distinguish the booked or allocated matchday area from neighbouring parking.

York Stadium recommends bags no larger than an A4 sheet of paper. Larger backpacks may be searched and tagged; items judged too large are held securely for collection after the match. Its policy identifies the ticket office as the bag-retention point. Searches are conducted by qualified SIA personnel, and the published procedure requires parental or carer approval before searching bags carried by children under sixteen. Fold-up chairs and children’s car seats are among the prohibited items.

Our advice (opinion): We would use the Little Yorkshire Coffee Co in the leisure-centre atrium as a named arrival stop before moving into the rugby concourses.

The four stands and West Stand priority seating

The stadium's accessibility directory names the Azuma East, West, North and South stands individually, with a separate AccessAble guide for each. It also separates hospitality from the ticket-office and club-shop areas.

York RLFC's 2026 season-ticket instructions direct supporters with accessibility requirements to unreserved West Stand tickets. The upper three rows have priority for those supporters, and a lift reaches the top of the stand. The club explains that this arrangement followed concerns about the available space on the East Stand balcony and in the LNER Lounge.

The stadium operator lists wheelchair bays in the North, South and West stands, with designated ambulant spaces and the option for ambulant spectators to choose another area. Ticket arrangements belong to the organisation staging the game. For Knights or Valkyrie rugby, the club's West Stand instructions therefore supply the event-specific seating detail alongside the building's broader range of facilities. ;.

Listed accessibility facilities

Lifts serve the Azuma East and West stands, and the stadium lists wheelchair-height catering counters. Accessible concourse toilets include stoma-specific facilities. Hospitality suites also have accessible access. These details identify practical features beyond the presence of wheelchair bays, covering the journey between a seat, refreshments and toilets within the stadium.

York RLFC places carer seats beside accessible seats and describes its boxes and hospitality areas as accessible. Its rugby-specific information states that it does not offer an audio commentary service, loop service or text line. A dedicated steward or volunteer can be arranged following advance notification to the club, making direct contact especially relevant for support beyond the building's physical facilities.

Combining York rugby with the city

The stadium complex includes a 13-screen cinema with IMAX and retail and restaurant space alongside the sporting facilities. The community hub contains a library and bookable rooms. These are named components of the development in the council's description, giving a visit to Huntington a different setting from the historic streets and visitor attractions in central York.

York RLFC identifies York's Chocolate Story at King's Square, York YO1 7LD, as a city-centre attraction associated with the club. Its guided tour follows chocolate's history and its connection with York. The location is a separate city-centre stop, distinct from the stadium at Huntington, and offers a specific indoor attraction to combine with a rugby weekend.

Our opinion: For a first rugby weekend in York, a city-centre base makes the most appealing combination with King's Square and the station. Treat Monks Cross as the match destination and use service 9 for the stadium leg. A stay beside the leisure complex instead suits a trip centred on the ground itself.

York rugby questions

Who runs the stadium on matchdays?

York Stadium Management Company manages the stadium bowl, including the pitch, stands, changing facilities and broadcasting areas. It procures stewards and handles stadium safety arrangements. GLL manages the wider leisure operation, while CGC supplies catering and hospitality. York RLFC and York City are licensed tenants through agreements with the council, explaining why stadium and club information appear on separate websites.

Does York host rugby union as well?

The council includes the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup and women's Six Nations among the international events staged here. It also lists an England rugby union open training session. Those events sit alongside the Knights, Valkyrie and rugby league cup programme; the stadium's rugby history already extends beyond the regular competitions of its resident teams.

House of the Trembling Madness occupies a Georgian building at 14 Lendal, York YO1 8AA, between the city walls and the River Ouse. Its ordinary pub tables are walk-in only, while the attic and basement function rooms can be booked separately. This is a central York pub option for the city portion of a rugby visit, with its address distinct from the stadium's Monks Cross location.

The RFL's 2025 cup-semi-final instructions located the ticket office at the West Stand's main entrance and recommended bags no larger than A4. Larger bags could be searched, tagged and held until after the match. Those event instructions give a concrete example of the security arrangements used when the Community Stadium hosts a major neutral rugby league occasion.
